BitSkins, one of the longest-running marketplaces for Counter-Strike skins, has closed. The company announced the shutdown on its blog on 27 May 2026, and the platform went offline at the end of June.
The timeline
According to BitSkins’ own announcement:
- 27 May 2026: shutdown announced; the site stayed open so users could clear their accounts.
- 29 May 2026: new listings and trade offers were permanently disabled.
- 30 June 2026: final closure; automated purchases and withdrawals went offline.
Users were told to spend any remaining balance on skins, because deposits were non-refundable, and to withdraw all items to their Steam accounts before the deadline. After 30 June, getting items back requires contacting support manually.
Why it closed
BitSkins gave two sets of reasons. On the legal and financial side, it pointed to tightening regulation, unexpected restrictions from authorities and VAT charges it called “outrageous”. On the technical side, it cited ongoing Steam API limitations, unstable connections and rising maintenance costs. Together, it said, these had made the business loss-making.
What it means for players
BitSkins was a marketplace, not a case opening site, but the reasons it gave affect the whole skin economy:
- Regulation is getting stricter. More countries treat skin trading and skin gambling as financial or gambling activity, with the taxes and licensing that come with it.
- Steam’s limits bite. Sites that depend on Steam trades are exposed to API changes. The Trade Protection system Valve added in July 2025 changed how quickly traded items can move again.
- Don’t store value on third-party sites. A site can close with a few weeks’ notice. Keep only what you’re actively using on any marketplace or case site, and withdraw the rest.
If you still had items on BitSkins
If you missed the deadline, the announcement says recovery is only possible through manual support. Contact BitSkins through the official site and be wary of anyone offering to “recover” your items for a fee: that’s a common scam after a shutdown.
